Tiger Woods misses the cut at first PGA event in over a year

Tiger Woods has missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open, his first full PGA tournament in almost 18 months.

The 14-time major champion, who previously underwent two back operations, carded a 72 to cap off a disappointing PGA return after hitting a four-over 76 on the opening day.

Day two started promisingly for Woods, hitting a birdie in the 10th hole on the par-five. He failed to build on that however, parring the next hole before bogeying the 12th. His front nine featured further pars, a bogey on the third hole and a birdie on the fifth.

Speaking after his exit, Woods said he was happier with his performance on the second day and stressed that he needs more competitive golf to get back into the swing of things.

"It's frustrating not being able to have a chance to win the tournament."

"Overall today was a lot better than yesterday. I hit it better, I putted well again. I hit a lot of beautiful putts that didn't go in, but I hit it much better today, which was nice."

"Playing tournament golf is a little bit different than playing at home in a cart. I need to get more rounds under my belt."

The former world number one, who won his last major in 2008, made his official comeback to competitive golf at the Hero World Challenge in The Bahamas last month.

He finished that tournament in 15th place overall, seeing off Russell Knox and Emilano Grillo.

Meanwhile, Ireland's Shane Lowry carded a one-over 73 to make the cut, while Seamus Power and Padraig Harrington missed out.
