Tiger Woods' mother is looking out for him - no matter the time

Tiger Woods feels he is coping okay with his return to golf after a long injury lay-off.

The 14-time Major champion plays on the European Tour this week, with the Dubai Desert Classic starting on Thursday.

After only recently returning from 17 months away to take part in the Farmers Insurance Open, Woods thinks he is holding up well.

But he says certain people always worry - especially his mother.

"I'm feeling pretty good. I'm tired. My Mom called me at about 2 in the morning last night, woke me up, asked me how I was doing. And I said 'Mom, do you realise there is a nine hour time difference?'" he said.

Woods is no stranger to a late night phone activity though as Rory McIlroy once revealed in a recent interview with Sunday Independent journalist Paul Kimmage.

"But he struggles to sleep, I think is an effect of overtraining, so I tell him to calm down sometimes. He’d be texting me at four o’clock in the morning: 'Up lifting. What are you doing?'" McIlroy said.

Woods also says he hasn't travelled to the Dubai Desert Classic just to make up the numbers.

The former world number one is playing in his first regular event on the European Tour since 2014.

Woods says the "goal is to win" the event, which tees off early tomorrow morning.

He said: "The goal is to win it and that doesn’t change. Whether I’m injured, coming off an injury or I’m playing well, or I’m playing poorly, if I’m in the event, it’s to win."

Woods finished on 4-over after four rounds of action at the Farmers Insurance Open in California.
