Tiger Woods optimistic after latest back operation

Former World No 1 Tiger Woods faces up to six more months away from golf after undergoing a back operation.

In a statement, the 14-time Major champion says it was successful in reducing pain he has suffered down into his leg.

It is the fourth time Woods has had surgery in just three and a half years.

His most recent comeback ended with him withdrawing from February's Dubai Desert Classic.

Woods explained the situation on his official website, explaining that "full activity" can be generally expected again after six months of rehabilitation.

"The surgery went well, and I'm optimistic this will relieve my back spasms and pain," he said.

"When healed, I look forward to getting back to a normal life, playing with my kids, competing in professional golf and living without the pain I have been battling so long."

He added: "I would like to thank all the fans for staying in touch and their kind wishes. The support I have received has never waned, and it really helps."

The 41 year old won the most recent of his 14 majors in 2008 at the US Open.

His last win on the PGA Tour came back in 2013 when he won the WGC Bridgestone Invitational.
