Tiger Woods begins his long awaited attempt to return to the upper echelons of the golfing world this Thursday when he tees off at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

The former world number one has plummeted to number 663 in the world due to a recurring back injury which required two surgeries to overcome.

Speaking to the media ahead of his return to the fold and the impact his busy schedule might have on his body he said: “That is a concern, there’s no doubt about it. But I’m also looking forward to it. I’ve sat out long enough.

“My body is in a pretty good state where I feel I can handle that workload.

“But I still have to go out and do it…as far as my game is concerned, I’m excited about playing this week. I’m playing well. I just need to get some tournament rounds under my belt.”

The Torrey Pines course is a favourite of the 14 time major winner where he has won eight times including the 2008 US Open.

Woods is then due to fly to the Middle East for the Dubai Desert Classic as his 2017 schedule clicks into gear.

Another win at Augusta is also never far from his mind and speaking to Golf Digest he said: "Once the season ends, typically, in the fall, I start thinking about what I need to do to get ready for Augusta. I’ve done it for 20 years. Whether it’s equipment or it’s swing or whatever it is, in the back of my head I’m getting ready for Augusta."
