Tom Coughlin in taks to take over from Chip Kelly at the Eagles

Former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin could be set to fill the void left after the Philadelphia Eagles parted ways with Chip Kelly on the back of a disappointing season in 2015.

The Eagles are on the lookout for a new coach, and it seems that two-time Super Bowl winner Tom Coughlin is in discussions to succeed Chip Kelly.

The former New York Giants coach stepped down on Monday after his side failed to make the playoffs, with many suspecting that he might bring an end to his illustrious career at the age of 69-years-old.

However, Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that the Giants expect Coughlin to talk to the Eagles about the job, while USA Today state that sources claim the Eagles have already contacted them to seek permission to speak to Coughlin.

Pro Football Talk report that Coughlin may have been nudged out of the position by the ownership, but it was referred to as a resignation in the media, meaning that he would need permission from the New York franchise before taking over another position.

Reports suggest that Chip Kelly and Eagles owner Jeff Lurie differed on the direction that the team would take, in particular over the amount of control that the head coach would have over decisions made in the front office, and that was what lead to the seemingly abrupt end to his tenure in Philadelphia at the end of December.

For his part, Chip Kelly has apparently been in talks with the San Francisco 49ers, who also have a vacancy at head coach position. They opted to fire Jim Tomsula after just one year in charge, which he ended with a 5-11 record.
