Tony Ward named the new president of Limerick FC

Former Munster and Ireland fly-half Tony Ward has been named as the honorary president of First Division leaders Limerick FC.

Ward played for the club four two years in the early-1980s. He was part of the team that won the FAI Cup in 1982, beating Bohemians in the final.

Limerick are currently runaway leaders in the First Division and look set to bounce back straight to the Premier Division after relegation last year. After eight games, Martin Russell's side are already ten points clear.

61-year-old Ward was asked into the position by Limerick's chairman Pat O'Sullivan. It is hoped he will be able to help the team with corporate bodies in the city.

“I deem it an honour and a privilege to be asked to be involved. What I love about it is it’s integrating the old with the new", Ward told Limerick's website.

“For me to be bridging the gap, so to speak, between the class of ‘80 and ‘82 which was the golden era of Limerick football, certainly up to now, I was only too delighted. I will do anything I can to promote the city and to promote Limerick Football Club."

O'Sullivan hopes that Ward's involvement will help the club advance off the field. "We felt it was important that we tried to tie the old with the new, and the old has given huge, huge positivity to this city, going back 40 years ago for me. We wanted to add a layer of credibility to what we were doing."

Limerick are at home to Waterford United in a Munster derby on Saturday evening in Market's Field.
