Tour De France to resume today under increased security cover following attacks in Nice

Heightened security has been arranged for today's stage at the Tour de France following the tragic attacks in Nice yesterday.

At least 84 people have been confirmed dead after a lorry crashed into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day, a French national holiday.

In consideration of this incident, regional government officials say that security measures are expected to be increased today at the Tour de France.

This sporting event attracts over 12 million spectators, who line the route without many barriers separating them from the riders.

Some 23,000 members of the French police force have been deployed for the Tour, and will be stationed at various points along the route.

A minute's silence was held before the first rider began today and race organisers also say that this stage of the race will be dedicated to those who died in the attacks.

In addition, a state of emergency in the country has been extended by three months and Prime Minister Manuel Valls has declared three days of national mourning from Saturday.

Chris Froome currently has a lead of 47 seconds on Adam Yates in second place.
