Trap always had a twinkle his eye when I turned up - Kevin Doyle

Kevin Doyle has given a sparkling insight into the Ireland camp under Giovanni Trappatoni, agreeing that the team would “run through brick walls” for the Italian.

Speaking to the Keith Andrews Show, Kevin told Keith and Dave McIntyre that he felt that Trap brought back a good feeling to an Irish setup that had struggled under Steve Staunton.

“It was good as a player if you were in the team – I really enjoyed it. He was really nice to me. He’d always have a smile and a twinkle in his eye when I turned up. He would always say “Kevin, relax – you’ve run a lot, relax...” whispering to me.

“He’d always have a word with me because I ran a lot, he probably knew that I needed to calm it down a lot during training but I always felt he had a word for me, or a smile for me. He played me an awful lot – in the end, he didn’t play me an awful lot, but then I probably didn’t deserve to either!

On Ireland’s more agricultural style, Kevin believes that the camp were well-drilled in their exploits and that the game was often more enjoyable to play than to watch.

“For a long time, our style wouldn’t have been the prettiest – but we knew what we were doing. We had a plan, we stuck to it all week... [we] were all on the same page, I think.”

“I was playing for Ireland, Giovanni Trappatoni was my manager – an absolute legend! So I was just happy to play we were getting good results. I played the previous campaign under Steve Staunton and it didn’t work out and we were tailing off playing better football – we were never anywhere. So with Giovanni, we were first or second in the group and there was a buzz around the place.”
