Trapattoni on South Africa's high profile managerial applicants list

The South African national football team have confirmed that former Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni is on a list of high profile coaches who have applied for their international manager vacancy.

Taking to Twitter, the Bafana Bafana confirmed that Trap and his compatriot former Inter Milan and Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini have applied for the South Africa job.

There are other well known applicants revealed including ex-Real Madrid and Malaga manager Bernd Schuster, who played for Germany, Barcelona and Real during his playing career.

Another German legend in the shape of Lothar Matthaus has also been listed as well as ex-Egypt manager Hassan Shehata, who led his country to Africa Cup of Nations glory in 2006, 2008 and 2010.

South Africa have not qualified for the World Cup since 2010 when they hosted the tournament, having previously made it to the global showpiece in 1998 and 2002.

Their recent Africa Cup of Nations record has also been poor. They did not qualify for this year's tournament and were knocked out at the group stage in 2015.

While they reached the quarter finals two years earlier, the three tournaments before that in 2004, 2006 and 2008 saw them knocked out at the first available opportunity.

It is a far cry from the impact made by the Bafana Bafana after their post-Apartheid international emergence.

In 1996, they won the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil, before finishing second in 1998 and third in 2000.
