Tributes pour in for handball star Conall McCavitt after hit-and-run accident

Conall McCavitt remains in a serious condition in hospital after a suspected hit and run accident which took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Cardinal O’Fiaich Square, Crossmaglen.

The handball star, who won two world titles in 2012, is being treated in Royal Hospital Belfast as he recovers from the accident.

Tributes for McCavitt have been pouring in, with a number of other handball teams and clubs from around the country sending their thoughts and prayers to him and his family.

GAA Hanbdall described McCavitt as a "great friend to many off the courts," while Tyrone GAA similarly spoke of him as a "very good friend and playing colleague."

McCavitt's own province, Armagh GAA, asked that all fans and supporters keep him and his family in their thoughts, and stated that "is a firm favourite in Ireland and beyond" for his attitude on and off the courts.

According to The Irish Mirror, a man was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of a number of motoring offences, but was released on bail after being questioned.

In a statement, a PSNI spokesperson said: "The offending car did not stop. A blue coloured Volkswagen Passat, believed to have been involved, has been recovered by police from the area of the market square in Crossmaglen."

The PSNI are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the incident, and ask that anyone with information about the movements of the car should contact officers in Newry.
