Two Irish players named in EFL Team of the Season

Two Irish defenders, one from either side of the border, have been named in the EFL Team of the Season.

The team, which comprises players from all three divisions of the Football League was announced on Sunday night in London.

Former Shamrock Rovers defender Enda Stevens, was joined in defence by Northern Ireland international Conor McLaughlin. Both men play in League Two for Portsmouth and and in League One for Fleetwood Town respectively.

Stevens is in his second season at Fratton Park, as Portsmouth look to seal automatic promotion in the coming weeks. The Dubliner has started 40 of his side's 41 league goals this season, scoring once.

Fleetwood Town are currently in third place in League One, and look like they will fall just short in their bid for automatic promotion. McLaughlin, who played for Northern Ireland at Euro 2016 last summer, has played in 38 league games this season, scoring four times.

Last season, only one Irish player made the time, with Brentford star and Republic of Ireland international Alan Judge taking his place in midfield.

The two defenders both return to action this weekend, as Stevens' Portsmouth play Plymouth in a south-coast derby. Fleetwood are due to play Peterborough on Saturday, as McLaughlin and his team mates look to reach The Championship for the first time.
