Tyron Woodley set to defend his welterweight title at UFC 205 in New York

Tyron Woodley will defend his UFC welterweight title for the first time this November when he faces Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson at UFC 205 in New York.

Woodley, who recorded the fastest ever knockout in a welterweight title fight, had previously expressed his intention to defend his title against the returning Nick Diaz or Georges St-Pierre.

These two, although representing the biggest 'money fights' would have over taken Thompson who is the number one contender at 170lbs.

Woodley confirmed the bout at the UFC Fight Night 94 weigh-ins last night. The timing couldn't be much better for Thompson, who currently boasts a seven-fight win streak. The latest of these victories came against the now-Bellator fighter Rory MacDonald at UFC Fight Night 89.

The fight will now feature another welterweight bout, adding to Donald Cerrone vs. Kelvin Gastelum on the main card. Cerrone has been in fine form since his jump from lightweight to welterweight and was in line to face Robbie Lawler before the former welterweight champion withdrew from the fight.

UFC 205 takes place November 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
