UCD defeat DCU to claim Sigerson Cup for the first time in 20 years

The game played in Jordanstown was an attritious battle with the men from Belfield coming out on top

UCD have won the Sigerson Cup for the first time in 20 years by defeating DCU on a scoreline of 0-10 to 2-02 in Jordanstown.

The game, which was played in less than ideal conditions, was a low scoring affair in the first half and it was 1-2 to 0-4 in favour of DCU thanks to a late Stephen O'Brien goal.

One of the talking points of the half was UCD losing two of their pivotal forwards, Niall Kelly and Paul Mannion, through a black card and injury.

That did not stop the Dublin college, however as they scored four consecutive points to start the second half. DCU's only score of the half came through a dubious penalty decision, which Conor Moynagh dutifully dispatched to bring the sides level yet again.

John Heslin put UCD ahead on 56 minutes and an insurance point from Stephen Coen was enough to ensure the Sigerson Cup was heading back to Belfield with ex-Galway footballer John Divilly and his side.

Coincidentally, Divilly was a part of the UCD panel that last lifted the Sigerson Cup and he has his hands on it two decades later with an entirely different surrounding cast.
