Georges St-Pierre's future may still lie in the UFC.

The Canadian former Welterweight champion, vacated his title in December 2013. After almost three years away from the Octagon, the 35-year-old is ready to return to action.

Speaking on The MMA Hour on Monday, St-Pierre said: “My lawyer terminated the contract with the UFC," and added that he was now a free agent.

"I think we were close to an agreement toward the end, until the big news arrived, and the news was the UFC had gotten sold to new owners,” St-Pierre told Ariel Helwani. “We were told that everything was put on ice until the new owners take charge.”

Hours after St-Pierre made his announcement, the UFC released a statement stating that the Canadian is still contracted to the organisation.

"Georges St-Pierre remains under an existing agreement with Zuffa, LLC as his MMA promoter," MMAFighting.com reported the statement read. "Zuffa intends to honor its agreement with St-Pierre and reserves its rights under the law to have St-Pierre do the same."

While no date has been set of GSP's return to fighting, his battle with the UFC outside the Octagon could be one of the most intriguing of his career.
