Sepp Blatter's new Presidential term has started off on rocky ground with reports emerging the FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke is involved in the bribery scandal that caused the arrests on FIFA officials in Zurich last week.
The New York Times reports that Valcke is the "high-ranking FIFA official" who American prosecutors believe transferred $10 million to former CONCACAF President Jack Warner in exchange for helping South Africa host the 2010 World Cup.
Valcke's alleged involvement is mentioned in the indictment that was filed last month in New York. It states:
"In fact, on January 2, 2008, January 31, 2008 and March 7, 2008, a high-ranking FIFA official caused payments of $616,000, $1,600,000, and $7,784,000 - totaling $10 million - to be wired from a FIFA account in Switzerland to a Bank of America correspondent account in New York, New York, for credit to accounts held in the names of CFU and CONCACAF, but controlled by the defendant JACK WARNER, at Republic Bank in Trinidad and Tobago."
If the Valcke allegations were to be proven, Sepp Blatter's position at FIFA President may become untenable as The New York Times claim "the revelation puts the money trail closer to Mr. Blatter, FIFA’s president, than had been previously known."
