'Very poor' Munster face problems this year - Matt Williams

Matt Williams believes there are ‘real problems’ for Munster in their approach to away games and their defensive setup under Johann van Graan.

Coming off the back of a 37-13 defeat to Cardiff Blues last Friday, Matt spoke to us on Wednesday Night Rugby, brought in association with Eir Sport.

“It’s real problems for Munster. They made 119 tackles but missed 20 – for every six tackles, they are missing one. 13 turnovers on top of that – it was a very poor performance.

“The real problem is that all four tries from Cardiff – who have been exceptionally poor to date – they went through Munster.

“This isn’t something new – in the last 17 away games, they have only won 5. It’s their form on the road that is really, really poor.”

While their home record is relatively good, the Munster men need to address their approach to key moments in games both home and away if they are to prevail this season.

“It wasn’t just that they got beaten, it was that the defence was so poor. They were dominated at the breakdown. The pace at which Cardiff could play the game was at a pace that Munster couldn’t cope with.

“[Playing Ulster next] shouldn’t detract from what our conversation in the long-terms is about Munster.

“Both away games to Glasgow and Cardiff have been really poor.”
