WATCH | Reaction to Ireland's passage to the World Cup final |

Ireland won a dramatic penalty shoot-out against Spain in London on Saturday to claim a place in the World Cup final.

Graham Shaw's side have been the surprise package of the tournament and, after topping their pool after two games and qualifying for the quarter-final, they have surpassed their even their own wildest expectations.

David Fitzgerald joined Saturday's Off the Ball as the side made history and speaking to Nathan, he said: "It's phenomenal - just phenomenal. I think if you had to put a blue print before the game started on how Ireland were going to win the game - it's built on the same reasons that they've got to, now, the final: hard-nosed defence, don't give anything away, tight and the one thing you'd say about them the whole tournament - there's no gifts.

"There's no times they're putting in bad passes where it gives the opposition real opportunities. Corners, they've been very good on - not quite the ratio today but they did score their corner chance and they're not giving away many chances."

The sides finished 1-1 at full time and 2-2 after five penalties each only for Gillian Pinder to score the decisive goal in sudden death.

Fitzgerald was quick to praise the calmness shown by Pinder, saying: "I think what Gillian managed to do was to stay in the moment.

"In reality, it's so easy to say, it is just a penalty - you know the consequences after - but Gillian looked very calm. She didn't look rushed, she took her time, probably the guts of the eight seconds and managed to slot it in."
