WATCH: Juanfran pleads for forgiveness as Atletico fans rise to give him a standing ovation

The Spanish right-back missed the crucial spot kick but Atletico fans refused to let him accept the blame

As Juanfran surged forward to deliver an inch-perfect cross onto Yannick Carrasco's foot, little did he know that less than an hour later he would be pleading with Atletico fans at the San Siro for forgiveness.

The right-back scored the decisive penalty against PSV Eindhoven in the round of 16 penalty shoot-out but shot low, hard and ultimately, too far to Keylor Navas' right as his penalty struck the post.

After the game he is seen with hands outstretched, in tears and begging for the forgiveness of the Rojiblancos' support. The fans, however, were having none of it as they stood to applause a player who has been at the centre of Diego Simeone turning this side into contendors on every stage they appear on.

His teammates are quick to realise how upset Juanfran is and rush to his side in one final act of cohesion before they prepare to walk up the steps to receive their runners-up medals for the second time in three years.

The 31-year-old has a busy summer ahead as he is set to start in Vicente del Bosque's Spanish side at Euro 2016. It might take him a while to forget about the crucial penalty, however, as his side suffered defeat at the hands of Real Madrid for the second time in three years in Europe's biggest club competition.
