American sprinter Justin Gatlin has run the fastest time of the year in the 100m event, less than three months out from the start of the Olympic Games in Rio.

The London 2012 bronze medalist ran a time of 9.88 seconds to beat Jamaican Asafa Powell (9.94) and compatriot Tyson Gay (9.98) win the 100m at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meeting in Oregon.

34-year-old Gatlin heads the Diamond League standings following his win in Shangai earlier in the month.
