WATCH: Martin O'Neill was having none of Rio Ferdinand's guff on BT last night

"Centre halves, I love it, I really love it. They have an incredible ability to blame someone else for a goal."

One of the most endearing qualities Martin O'Neill has is his ability to speak honestly and directly about a subject.

He has no problem standing up for himself and pointing an end to guff pedalled by fellow pundits if he feels what they're saying is simply untrue.

Take, for example, when he expertly shut down Fabio Cannavaro and Patrick Vieira during the coverage of the 2014 World Cup when the players were unsure as to whether he had played the game.

"Despite the fact that there are two World Cup winners here, when it comes to the Champions League - which used to be called the European Cup - I've won two of them," he said before finishing with, "I'd just like to know how many you two have won?".

Well played, Martin.

On BT's coverage of Leicester City's first game in the Champions League last night, Rio Ferdinand was discussing the hole N'Golo Kant leaves in the Foxes midfield and how it will leave the defenders exposed and vulnerable to conceding goals.

It is at this point where O'Neill jumps in to say: "Analysed like a true centre-half."

He continued: "You are murdering the midfield players. Centre halves, I love it when a goal is scored, they never worry about closing them down themselves, it is the midfielders to be blamed.

"No wonder the midfielder has a heart attack at half-time, he's done so much running. Centre halves, I love it, I really love it. They have an incredible ability to blame someone else for a goal."
