Warren Gatland set to call up new players to Lions squad - report

Warren Gatland is reportedly calling up new players to bolster his British and Irish Lions squad, ahead of their opening Test against New Zealand.

It's unclear as to where Gatland will be drawing his new recruits from, but BBC Sport sources suspect that Wales and Scotland could be possible options as they are both on summer tours in Australasia.

Wales defeated Tonga in Auckland on Friday, while Scotland are due to face Australia in Sydney on Saturday. The short travel time required to link up with the Lions increases the likelihood of Gatland turning to both of these nations for new recruits.

Ireland are currently on tour in Japan and the English squad is preparing for a second Test against Argentina.

The Lions face the Maori All Blacks on Saturday morning and the Chiefs next Tuesday before the opening Test against New Zealand and Gatland wants to ensure that none of the Test squad are playing twice in one week.

Wales interim Head coach Robin McBryde says that he's happy to release some members of the Welsh squad to help out the Lions in their cause.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said:

"We weren't short-sighted enough to think we would come all the way to the other side of the world and not support the Lions if the call comes.

"If we can support them then we'll help them out, but I don't know what Warren is going to do."
