England second row was not named in the squad
English Premiership rugby side Wasps have not hidden their surprise at Joe Launchbury's exclusion from the 2017 British and Irish Lions squad.
Wasps have just one player in the squad in the shape of England wing Elliott Daly.
However, second row Launchbury did not make the cut as Lions head coach Warren Gatland selected other locks for the tour of New Zealand.
Wasps were quick to react on social media, with the club describing themselves as "gobsmacked" and highlighting their player's credentials:
All gobsmacked here that Joe Launchbury wont be with @lionsofficial. 2 motm's in a 6 Nations winning campaign & player of the comp nominee— Wasps (@WaspsRugby) April 19, 2017
Launchbury himself did not react, taking it with good grace and seconding Wasps' congratulations for Daly:
Wasps director of rugby Dai Young also spoke of his surprise that Launchbury did not make the squad.
"The one who we've really got to feel sorry about - and I'm mystified how he's not on the plane - is Joe Launchbury," said Young.
"Two Man of the Matches in the Six Nations, up for Player of the Six Nations and still doesn't get on the plane. As well as that he's captain of the team that's sitting top of the Premiership at this moment in time. So hard to understand how Launchbury is not on the plane and very hard to understand what more he could have done."
