Waterson submits VanZant as Urijah Faber retires

Michelle Waterson submitted Paige VanZant in the first round of their UFC women's strawweight bout in Sacramento last night.

Waterson attacked from the outset forcing VanZant back against the cage, took her down and locked in a rear-naked choke which ended the fight in the first.

It was VanZant's second submission loss in her last three fights and Waterson now moves to 2-0 in the UFC.

Fan favourite Urijah Faber also retired from the sport after beating Brad "One Punch" Pickett via unanimous decision.

The "California Kid" hangs up his gloves as a former WEC featherweight champion with a 34-10 professional record.

Speaking in the octagon after the fight he said: "Sacramento, I love you. California, my family and everybody who supports me so much - thank you. This life experience has been amazing. I honestly feel like I've got my PhD in real life and I'm ready to go forward like I've just graduated and I'm ready to do some big things."

He will be most remembered for his rivalry with current UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz after they engaged in a memorable trilogy, which Cruz won 2-1.

Faber also coached against Conor McGregor in a series of the Ultimate Fighter and despite thier differences at the time, the pair are on good terms now.
