Wayne Rooney apologises "unreservedly" to England interim boss Gareth Southgate

England captain Wayne Rooney has apologised "unreservedly" to interim national boss Gareth Southgate.

It comes after late-night photos were printed of him celebrating their win over Scotland.

The pictures show Rooney posing with guests at the team hotel on in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He didn't break any rules but in a statement admits the images are "inappropriate" for the national captain.

"Naturally Wayne is sorry that pictures taken with fans have been published," the statement reads.

"Although it was a day off for the whole squad and staff, he fully recognises that the images are inappropriate for someone in his position.

"Earlier today Wayne spoke privately to both Gareth Southgate and Dan Ashworth (FA technical director) to unreservedly apologise.

"He would like to further extend that apology to any young fans who have seen these pictures."

The Football Association says it's now reviewing its policy around free time for players.

It's understood Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is angry with the FA for allowing the situation to develop.
