Wayne Rooney proud to become the number one goal-scorer for Manchester United

Wayne Rooney made history today with a 250th goal for Manchester United, officially making him the club's all-time leading goal-scorer.

The substitute produced the finish in stoppage time against Stoke to rescue a point and surpass the goal-scoring record he previously held with Bobby Charlton.

It was just his fifth United goal across all competitions, in a season which has seen the captain get pushed out to the peripheries.

But with United in danger of losing their winning form today, Rooney produced the equaliser four minutes into added time with a free-kick that crashed into the top corner of the net.

The 31-year-old equalled Charlton's record in an FA Cup meeting with Reading earlier this month. The strike after just seven minutes saw Rooney bypass United legends including Denis Law, Jack Rowley, George Best and Ryan Giggs in the goal-scoring stakes.

With no immediate plans for Rooney to depart from the Premier League club, it's likely that he will add further goals to his record before the season ends.

Speaking after the game, Rooney said that while he was proud to achieve this milestone in his career, he was also conscious of the points lost at the Britannia Staidum:

"It's a great honour - I'm very proud. It's difficult at the minute to be over-pleased because of the result - two points dropped.

"But in the grand scheme of things, it's a great honour. It's something I never expected when I joined the club. But I'm delighted and I'm very proud.

"It's been great - we've been very successful and there's more to come. I'm proud to play for this club and to be the all-time top scorer is a huge honour and is something that will live with me for the rest of my life."

Bobby Charlton also paid a visit to the United dressing-room to pay tribute to Rooney.
