Wayne Rooney lashes out at "disgraceful" reaction to late night photos
He adds that "enough is enough"18:35 Saturday 19 November 2016, 18:35 19 Nov 2016
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says the reaction to his behaviour while on England duty has been "disgraceful".
The English national team and Man United captain apologised after photos emerged of him drinking into the early hours of the morning following last week's win over Scotland in World Cup qualifying.
In a statement in midweek by his representatives, Rooney had said: "Naturally Wayne is sorry that pictures taken with fans have been published.
"Although it was a day off for the whole squad and staff, he fully recognises that the images are inappropriate for someone in his position.
"Earlier today Wayne spoke privately to both Gareth Southgate and Dan Ashworth (FA technical director) to unreservedly apologise.
"He would like to further extend that apology to any young fans who have seen these pictures."
But speaking after Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Arsenal in the Premier League, Rooney insisted that he is "not finished yet" and that it feels like the media are trying to write his obituary.
"What's been going on is disgraceful. I'm proud to play for my country and I'm proud of my achievements. It's not finished yet," he said.
"I think what's been going on is disgraceful. It shows a lack of respect and I think enough is enough.
"That's all I want to say."
Rooney's form this season has also led to scrutiny over his role for club and country, with the player increasingly being used as an impact sub at Man United and question marks over his future as England captain.
