Wayne Shaw woke up on Tuesday morning, for the second time in his life, having left Sutton United the day before in testing circumstances.

The 45-year-old has become the most famous back-up goalkeeper in the world in recent days, due to eating a pie in the dugout during Sutton United's 2-0 loss to Arsenal in the the FA Cup. Less than 24 hours later, he resigned from the club after breaching betting regulations.

Shaw admitted he knew a betting company were offering 8-1 odds on him eating the pastry during the game prompting the Gambling Commission and The FA to look into whether the incident broke any rules.

"Wayne, himself, has offered his resignation to the chairman this afternoon and it's been accepted. It's a very sad end to what has been a good story", Sutton United manager Paul Doswell told Sky News.

The goalkeeper worked as the club as a goalkeeping coach. He was also one of the National League club's main faces behind the scenes, maintaining the artificial pitch at Gander Green Lane.

While Shaw has left the club, it is not the first time the goalkeeper left in acrimony. He was previously sacked by the club in 2013.

In December of that year, Shaw was warming up during a match against Kingstonian, and was on the wrong end of some verbal abuse from the opposing fans over his weight.

Shaw jumped over the pitch side advertising hoardings and headbutted the fan. "I had a bad day at work", he told the Daily Mail at the time. "Usually it's good fun and banter but sometimes it gets too personal."

There may be more chapters to be written in the story of Wayne Shaw and Sutton United.
