Wexford Youths defender Ryan Delaney joins Burton Albion

Wexford Youths defender Ryan Delaney has left the club to join Championship side Burton Albion.

The 19-year-old played in two pre-season games for The Brewers as a trialist, and has been offered a contract by Nigel Clough's team. He has signed a two-year deal with the option for a third.

Despite captaining Wexford Youths at Under-17 and Under-19 levels, along with playing in the First Division and Premier Division, Clough is unsure if Delaney can force his way into the squad immediately.

"He can play left back or left centre half. He’s only 19 and hasn’t yet played at a decent level but he does a lot of things naturally. He has not been in full-time training which means he’s been blowing a bit in the last 20 minutes of games but we think we can get him up to speed."

Delaney's move has delighted Wexford's manager Shane Keegan, who feels it may help other youngsters make the move to England.

"It is a great demonstration of what Wexford Youths' underage is capable of producing.  His attitude, application and behaviour have been exemplary throughout his time at Ferrycarrig Park".

The 19-year-old played 51 times in the League of Ireland, scoring two goals for the Ferrycarrig Park team before making the move.
