Conor McGregor v Floyd Mayweather is edging ever closer

News filtered through late last night and early this morning that half the deal was done.

For all the talk between the two fighters, McGregor had put his money where his mouth was. The UFC's biggest star committed to signing a contract to fight one of the biggest bouts in combat sport history.

"It is an honour to sign this record breaking deal alongside my partners Zuffa LLC, The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Paradigm Sports Management," McGregor told The Mac Life official website.

"The first, and most important part of this historic contract has now officially been signed off on. Congratulations to all parties involved. We now await Al Haymon and his boxer’s signature in the coming days."

Assuming this is not a bluff, it's now down to Mayweather.

The undefeated boxer is considered one of the greatest of all time and he looks set to earn a massive purse in a fight where not many people are rating the Irishman's ability.

Speaking to Newstalk Drive on Thursday, New York based MMA fighter and commentator Phoenix Carnevale said it looks like Mayweather will hold up his end of the deal.

"Looking at the magnitude of this, not only for the sport, but for pop-culture, I think [Mayweather] is going to sign," she said.

"I mean if you look at his history, he's done a lot of things that we forget about that were great for promotion.

"He's done WWE's RAW and Dancing With The Stars. Will now he might risk his 49-0 record to fight someone as polarising as Conor McGregor? We're not sure, but I do think this fight will happen."

McGregor is currently the UFC's reigning lightweight champion and has this year stated that he wants to fight twice. Earlier today he posted a picture of his son alongside belts won in both Cage Warriors and UFC promotions with the caption: "Let's go get some boxing ones now son."

Carnevale says that the announcement by McGregor was designed to force Mayweather's hand.

"Just the fact that half of it is done, I think once Mayweather gets his way, I think it will be signed. They were originally looking for a September date. They lost that, so we have to wait and see what happens in the next couple of weeks.

"Dana White has been very vocal in saying that half of it is done and saying half of it is done puts pressure on Mayweather to just sign it."
