Woods weathers "perfect storm" and hopes to recapture best form

Tiger Woods has struggled greatly since his spectacular fall from grace as the world's best golfer.

His personal life was plastered over media outlets around the world and understandably took it's toll his professional career.

With prodigies like Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth behind him, it looks as though the former world number one might be consigned to the history books.

But determined to recapture his form, he has been going through a transition to alter his swing whilst being plagued by back injuries and a loss of form.

He has described his troubles on golf's high seas as a "perfect storm" rather than his career becoming a sinking ship.

“I didn’t think it would take this long [to get back] because I thought I would have my short game earlier, which I didn’t at the very beginning of the year,” Woods told the media.

“You can cover up a lot of different things when you are chipping and putting well. So a lot of my missteps throughout the years, when I’ve changed coaches and changed techniques, my short game was always pretty good."

Woods is currently preparing for this week's Quicken Loans National and cited his struggles with the back injury as one of the primary reasons for his difficulty on the course.

“Don’t forget, I came off back surgery,” Woods said. “I changed my golf swing and did a polar 180 and recovering from back surgery. You add those two together, it’s the perfect storm and I have had to fight through both of those at the same time.”

The 39-year-old sits at 266 in the world rankings and shot a career worst 85 at the Memorial Tournament last month, missing the cut at both the US and British Opens.

“It’s frustrating not being able to win golf tournaments, not really being there in contention very often ... but I know how close it feels and I know I just need a couple of shots here and there and it turns the tide,” said Woods.

“People don’t really realise how close it is between a person who is winning (a tournament) and a person missing the cut.”

Woods has won 14 majors over the course of an illustrious career.
