World Boxing Association sanction 'superfight' between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko

Anthony Joshua looks set to face Wladimir Klitschko early next year for the WBA 'super' title, should he successfully defend his IBF strap against Eric Molina in December.

The World Boxing Association (WBA) last night confirmed that they have sanctioned a bout between the IBF champions Joshua and the former WBO, WBA, IBO and IBF world heavyweight champion Klitschko.

A prospective bout between the pair had been tabled for either the end of November or the start of December, but both sides ran out of time to agree a deal.

Joshua now faces American Molina on December 10th for his second IBF title defence, after successfully overcoming Dominic Breazeale earlier this year. The Olympic gold medallist defeated Charles Martin to claim the belt in April.

Tyson Fury beat Wladimir Klitschko 12 months ago to win dethrone the long-time world champion, but was forced to vacate the belts last month after being declared "medically unfit" to fight by his team.

Fury pulled out of two rematches with the veteran Ukranian in 2016, and continues his recovery from depression at present day.

"It was beautiful to finally see the WBA's decision last night finally allowing the Joshua v Klitschko fight for the spring," Hearn told Sky Sports.

"The deal is in place and we can now move forward with Bernd and their team to start confirming dates and venues.

"The only thing in AJ's way is Eric Molina, and the full focus must be on the toughest fight of his career on December 10th in Manchester. Wladimir will be ringside with his fingers crossed, and victory for AJ will set up this mega fight in March/April 2017."
