World Cup winner Gordan Banks vows to battle on following second cancer diagnosis

Former England international Gordan Banks, has publicly announced that he is suffering from kidney cancer for a second time.

The 77 year-old lost one kidney 10 years and was diagnosed with cancer a second time last year. He is currently receiving chemotherapy in his efforts to avoid getting a transplant. Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, a courageous Banks said:

'I am one of many in the country who have it. I have to battle on.'

Banks earned 73 caps for England during his international career and is said to have pulled off one of the best saves of all time when he leapt to the bottom corner in time to keep out a header from Brazilian legend Pele in 1970.

He was also named Fifa goalkeeper of the year six times and was unfortunately forced to retire after he suffered a severe eye injury as a result of a car crash in 1972.

Banks is the club president at Stoke City and earlier this year, a bronze statue depicting an image of him holding the World Cup, was unveiled at the club.

Banks says that his sporting achievements gave him the 'confidence' to 'battle through this health problem.'
