World Rugby commences review of controversial residency rules

World Rugby has formally begun its review of the three-year residency rule.

Vice-chairman of the governing body, Agustín Pichot, has been one of the most outspoken critics of the rule which has seen the likes of CJ Stander, Jared Payne, Richardt Strauss and Rodney Ah You become Irish internationals.

The likes of Australia, England, Scotland and France have also made use of the law to uncover more Test stars.

Back in May, Pichot had talked about trying to close the loophole entirely, but the former Argentine scrum-half did acknowledge that extending the residency period to five years is probably a more likely solution.
