Yaya Toure ommitted from Manchester City's Champions League squad

Pep Guardiola has left Yaya Toure out of his 2016-17 Champions League squad.

The Ivory Coast midfielder's future at the club was left in doubt when Guardiola was announced as the new boss and that was rubber-stamped when Toure was left out of all but one game so far this season; the second leg of City's Champions League qualifier against Steau Bucharest, which they led 5-0 from the first leg.

Guardiola was only allowed to select 17 international players in his squad and has 18 at the moment meaning Toure was the one to miss out.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager let four international players leave on transfer deadline day but Toure remains despite being an afterthought in Guardiola's plans.

Guardiola can change four players after the group stages but it means Toure can not playing in the opening rounds against Celtic, Barcelona and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Toure, 33, might not even get in after the group stages given the fact that it may be a systematic issue meaning Toure's slow and laborious defensive play will not bode well against European opposition.

Toure's contract at the club expires in 2017.
