You see the real class of Willie Mullins in defeat
The trainer endured a rough Leopardstown Christmas Festival20:29 Monday 1 January 2018, 20:29 1 Jan 2018
Vincent Hogan and Marie Crowe joined Dave McIntyre on Off the Ball for the Sunday Paper Review.
Willie Mullins endured a torrid time at the Leopardstown Christmas Festival and Vincent Hogan was quick to praise his attitude when all was crumbling around him.
"You learn so much about how people conduct themselves on the bad days and I think Willie Mullins - I mentioned when Douvan failed at Cheltenham on Day 2 and it meant it was a second blank day in a row for Willie Mullins and his dignity at a time when Cheltenham seemed to be collapsing around his ears was just magnificent and he's after repeating it this week.
"He had the week from hell really at Leopardstown but he is just reflective of the National Hunt Racing community. There's a quote in Aisling's piece from Gordon Elliott, who is Willie Mullins' main rival now in the training department in Ireland and he says 'I hope Faugheen is ok.'
"And, you look at Jessica Harrington when Sizing John failed - just the dignity of these people. And Mullins above anyone, his week, Nichols Canyon was killed - Faugheen's future is hanging by a thread. York Hill, Djackadam fluffed their Gold Cup auditions.
"I'm reading now from a piece from Roy Curtis in the Sunday World and it's a beautiful piece about Willie Mullins and just the dignity he showed on what had to be a week from hell and his views on where he's going at Cheltenham now have been transformed profoundly by a lot of mishap. Mishap after mishap at Leopardstown but there's a line from Roy that just sums it up: "He's a study how to summon composure even as the storm buffets all about you," he added.
