Zidane joins elite company as the 7th to win the Champions League as player and coach

Zinedine Zidane joined some elite company on Saturday night as he became just the 7th coach to win the Champions League as a player and as a manager in the competition's history.

He joins names such as Trappatoni, Ancelloti and Cruyff as players who have done the double on the field and from the dugout.

As Cristiano Ronaldo slammed his penalty to the net on Saturday night and Real Madrid collected their 11th Champions League title, Zidane might have been thinking back to 2002 when he scored the winner for Los Blancos against Bayer Leverkusen at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Not only is he the seventh to do it as a player and coach but only the second to win it as a player and coach with Real Madrid and the fourth to do it for the same club.

The seven to win as a coach and a manager are as follows:

  • Miguel Munoz (Real Madrid - player, Real Madrid - coach)
  • Giovanni Trappatoni (AC Milan - player, Juventus - coach)
  • Johan Cruyff (Ajax - player, Barcelona - coach)
  • Carlo Ancelloti (AC Milan - player, AC Milan & Real Madrid - coach)
  • Frank Rijkaard (AC Milan, Ajax - player, Barcelona - coach)
  • Pep Guardiola (Barcelona - player, Barcelona - coach)

The 43-year-old also became the first French coach to win the competition.
