Why Diego Simeone's Atletico exit hint is likely to be a message to his board

Just as two years previously, a Champions League final ended with Altetico Madrid's pain and Cristiano Ronaldo whipping off his shirt in celebration.

Unlike the 2014 Champions League final, penalties ultimately broke Atletico rather than extra-time and according to the BBC's Andy West neither side deserved to win the 2016 decider.

He joined Off The Ball tonight as the dust settles on another season of Champions League football and winning manager Zinedine Zidane was someone he highlighted.

"What's really interesting is the way Zinedine Zidane seems to be evolving as a coach and particularly if we look at the big games he's had in the last few weeks," said West, picking up on the more defensive, cautious style the France and Real Madrid legend has introduced since taking charge during the season, with defensive midfielder Casemiro the symbolic inclusion.

"So Casemiro coming in has really changed the team," he said.

While Atletico manager Diego Simeone raised doubts about his future after the final defeat, West expects him to stay but that "he also wants to push his board a little more", particularly in acquiring a world class striker now that they have greater financial clout.
