'Championship should start in April and finish at the end of June' - Brolly

Joe Brolly has called for the All-Ireland championship to run from April to June.

Speaking to Off The Ball tonight about the demands placed on modern gaelic football players, The Sunday Game pundit said he wants to see major changes to the calendar.

"The national league should start in January and finish at the end of March. The Championship should start in April and finish at the end of June," said the former Derry corner-forward.

"If you've got the All-Ireland final at the end of June or start of July, you've got June to December for the clubs. That would be a bold statement but it's what we need."

Brolly also spoke about the structural issues which he feels are putting a strain on players.

"The winter training ban, which is the hierarchy's only attempt to deal with the problem, is just laughable. It's just lip service and we have a real problem on our hands," said Brolly.

"Managers are trying to wringing every last drop out of them and county football is becoming a very negative experience."

The Sunday Game pundit also described the Gaelic Players Association as "part of the problem".
