Chrissy McKaigue outlines the secret to Slaughtneil's brilliant 2016 success

The 2016 season has truly been a golden year for Slaughtneil GAA club in every code you care to look at.

The Derry club are Ulster Senior Club Football Champions and simultaneously winners of the Ulster Senior Club Hurling Championship and county champions.

They have also achieved success in Camogie with a provincial championship which means a historic treble across all codes.

But what is underpinning this era of success?

For dual star Chrissy McKaigue, from the Gaelic football point of view, it's a feeling of being "re-inspired" after a relatively less successful 2015 campaign.

What has made it sweeter is how the club has bounced back from last year after a successful 2014, completing their triumph with a win over Kilcoo in the Ulster club football final on Sunday.

"We probably faced a bit of a hangover year last year. The All-Ireland campaign took a lot out of us. We had a lot of injuries even in the All-Ireland series and then 2015, we just couldn't really get going," McKaigue said on Off The Ball.

"Boys were tired. They were mentally tired and then this year we were completely re-inspired. We have a couple of young boys in there now and a few more young boys to come in hopefully next year. I suppose that's what it's all about.

"It's the fresh faces. It's a young person's game nowadays and I think a lot of our success this year is down to them young guys.

"The competition for places is absolutely fierce. We definitely have improved but I think the most exciting thing for us is we realise how much more we can improve on and that just really inspires everyone because we know we're nowhere near the finished article and we're still able to compete relatively well. So that hopefully bodes well for the future."
