"Very harsh" - David Brady reacts to the Diarmuid Connolly ban

Former Mayo footballer David Brady feels the 12 week ban imposed on Dublin forward Diarmuid Connolly is on the "harsh" side.

Connolly received the ban from the GAA's Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) for his altercation with a linesman during Dublin's Leinster SFC quarter-final victory over Carlow at O'Moore Park.

If upheld the ban would keep him out of the All Ireland Championship until the morning of the second of this year's All Ireland semi finals.

To discuss the ban and its severity, Off The Ball were joined Brady, as well as Mike Quirke and ex-Meath footballer Anthony Moyles.

"Very harsh," was Brady's response when asked for his reaction to the ban.

"He did wrong. In the build up to it there were too many judges and juries out there. I just think, you know what, he should have been sent off, full stop.

"That would, in my mind, have sent out a greater example to a lot of players that do that type of thing. He did wrong but I don't think the players, pundits and analysts would have been coming out and saying he should get 12 weeks.

"At the end of the day, he did touch the linesman. I don't think there was aggressiveness to it. He did remonstrate and pointing the finger in was probably more of an offence, in my mind, than anything else."

Brady added that he doesn't think the punishment is "100% fair".

Quirke felt the length of the ban was harsh but feels the rule book has "no ambiguity" in such examples.
