"I hope we catch them before the games" - Dick Pound on the parallel race against the drug cheats

The author of the World Anti-Doping Agency report which revealed the extent of doping in Russian athletics says that improvements in technology and doping detection methods will boost those trying to prevent cheating over the next decade.

Dick Pound, chairman of the Independent Commission, joined George on The Right Hook this evening and spoke about the prospect of stopping those using banned substances with just months to go to the Rio Olympics.

"Do I think that all of the drug users will not be in Rio? No. There will certainly be some. I hope we catch them before the Games so they don't ruin the competition. If not, we'll try and catch them at the Games and the IOC saves its samples from Games for a period of 10 years now and as technology increases and detection gets better, we can actually re-test," he said.

Pound also dismissed any possibility of Russian athletics gaining any political advantage from the current scandal.

"The experience has shown that the only people who get hurt by Olympic boycotts are the athletes of the countries who boycott. The games go on and the boycotting countries sort of shoot themselves in the foot and gain no political advantage," he said, while he also talked about the position of under-pressure International Association of Athletics Federations president Sebastian Coe.
