As of yet, Rory McIlroy has not confirmed it but it appears as if he has parted ways with long time caddie JP Fitzgerald.

However, McIlroy's manager Sean O'Flaherty told The Golf Channel that the Northern Irishman would "address all questions on Wednesday in Akron".

Any parting of the ways would be coming at a crucial juncture in the golf season with a WGC Bridgestone Invitational this week in Ohio and PGA Championship major coming up in North Carolina in the second week of August.

Speaking on Off The Ball, golf writer Lawrence Donegan echoed the point about the timing.

"It is a strange one, although Rory's maybe looking at Quail Hollow and thinks he could probably win that one with me on his back," he said, finishing with a self-deprecating joke.

"But yeah, it is a very odd time. They had a pretty good week at the Open Championship. I know that people think that he failed but Top 5 at a major championship is pretty good going.

"I think if you remember that, he had some kind words to say, certainly on the Thursday on the morning when Rory birdied five of the first six and JP according to the legend turned round to him and said, 'You're Rory f***ing McIlroy, get on with yourself'".

The timing was discussed on the Off The Ball Newsround by Joe and Richie:

Donegan continued: "But what people didn't notice actually on Saturday when Rory's scoring was good and he had a bit of momentum, he kind of stalled and double bogeyed the 10th and he came off afterwards and it's very seldom that players state things so baldly. He came off and the first thing he spoke about was he hit the wrong club on the 10th hole and that was pretty pointed. Usually players when they say that kind of stuff, they'll maybe accept responsibility for it but he just left that hanging out there."
