"The black card is a failed concept" - Dick Clerkin reacts to Dublin v Mayo

Unfortunately for a game that generated plenty of excitement in the frantic closing stages, it is some of the darker arts which also saw the light of day.

We read out the list of fouls, transgressions and off-the-ball incidents from Dublin v Mayo on Off The Ball tonight and were joined by former Dublin star Tomas 'Mossy' Quinn and Monaghan stalwart Dick Clerkin to react to what occurred.

Clerkin in particular has one bug bear: "Again, at the peak of the season, here we are talking about discipline, the issue with the rules and the greyness surrounding the likes of the black card. From the day it came in - I forewarned this and I'm blue in the face talking about this - it's a failed concept. There's no doubt about it. It's not going to change anything. Let's not kid ourselves that it's going to improve."

Our own Colm 'Wooly' Parkinson also made the point that the referee requires far more help and suggested a solution in the wake of numerous off-the-ball incidents.

"That's happening a lot as well and there's umpires and there's linesman. You only have to do that once and there's so many eyes on you. That should immediately be brought to the referee's attention. That's left to fester and suddenly that's going on off the ball all over the field and you see it in the corner of the screen as the camera's following the play - two lads lying on the ground," siad Wooly.

"A linesman should immediately be putting his flag up but that doesn't seem to be happening. The referee is down the river without a paddle and he's not getting any support by the two fellas behind the goals, who think they're there just to wave a flag and the fellas on the sideline who think they're there to give sideline balls. They're there to give referee assistance. They should all be dressed in black and they should all be helping him out."
