Eamon McGee reveals Donegal were so confident of beating Mayo in 2012 that two players went for pints

Eamon McGee has revealed that a couple of members of the Donegal panel were so confident of winning the All-Ireland final in 2012 that they went for pints before beating Mayo.

The now-retired Donegal footballer was speaking to Off The Ball on Saturday's All-Ireland preview panel.

Donegal won Sam Maguire in 2012 under Jim McGuinness at the peak of an extraordinary era of success for the county.

"I wrote my column two or three weeks ago that when we knew we were playing Mayo in the final in 2012, we were fairly confident and I know two members of the senior panel went for two pints that evening knowing that this is Mayo now," he said, adding that it was "unbeknownst" to McGuinness.

"Because that's the way we viewed them and it just flipped it on its head in 2014. We feared Mayo in 2014. And when Mayo and Kerry were playing, we said we're better off getting Kerry here and not that we were really cheering them, we were kind of going for Kerry in that semi-final because we said we'd be very afraid if we got Mayo."

Meanwhile, former Mayo midfielder David Brady discovered and revealed live on air, that the Jim McGuinness advising Mayo story wasn't true.
