How likely is La Liga to take its matches outside Spain?

When the potential for a 39th round of Premier League games staged outside of England and Wales was raised, controversy and fervent opposition ensued.

Shredding notions of a home and away round and seen as a means of increasing revenue from other markets, traditionalists didn't hide their displeasure and the 39th game has faded away for now as a potentially viable addition.

But now the talk is La Liga might explore the prospect of playing games outside of Spain, namely in places like the United States and China.

Our European football correspondent Graham Hunter joined us to discuss the motivations and likelihood of La Liga going global.

"Spain is a country whereby a lot of these types of initiatives get talked about, and people maybe grumble but they don't necessarily move with the same coherence and hard-nosed edge as the Premier League," he explained.

"There has been a drive from the very elite clubs and subsequently from the middle order clubs that we'd better serve Asia and we'd better tour America in the summer and that has begun to be understood.

"But the concept of playing these games which has been mooted, there has been next to no public or even briefing reaction because Spain is a country where if you can put off dealing with things while you argue about other things or about refereeing or you slag each other off, that's the way forward."

Graham added that,"When the Premier League was born in England as a template, we know the profitability and the cohesion and the aggression with which the Premier League is marketed. That still does not exist in Spain."

He also touched on the performances of Real Madrid and Barcelona performed in the Champions League group stages against APOEL and Juventus respectively as both sides got off to winning starts.
