After a season as assistant coach under Carlo Ancelotti, and another spell in charge of Real Madrid Castilla, Zinedine Zidane has finally been given the top job at Real Madrid.
On Thursday night's Off the Ball, Graham Hunter spoke in the Football Show about how he expects the World Cup winning Galactico to adjust to the managerial hot seat at the Bernabeu.
Hunter thinks that the French legend has been given the job "as a buffer to keep the angry mob away from a stupid president". Florentino Perez is now in his second period as Club President and since 2009, he has brought players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Gareth Bale to the club. In that period they have only won a single La Liga title, two Copa del Reys and a Champions League.
Despite Hunter's reservations over the Madrid hierarcy, he is delighted to see Zidane take the job, despite it being in mid-season. "It's fantastic to find out what (Zidane) is made of, to find out if there is excellence in his means of coaching, his means of managing, his vision of football as well as his style of play."
Zidane is clear about the brand of football he wants to play according to Hunter. "He wants there to be elegance, and speed of passing. He is asking his players to have at most, two or three touches on the ball. He wants there to be a high line in defence... He's not a stupid man in any sense."
"Whenever it's possible, you're going to find Isco, James, Bale, Benzema and Ronaldo in the team... Therefore, the team will be attacking and fluid."
Real Madrid's first game with Zidane at the helm takes place on Saturday when they welcome Deportiva la Coruna to the Bernabeu on Saturday.
