WATCH: Three in a row was "big motivating factor" for Man of the Match James McCarthy

As the full time whistle went in yesterday's All Ireland football final and Dublin celebrated a three-in-a-row achievement by beating Mayo, thoughts did turn to who had earned the Man of the Match award.

Some of our respondents on Twitter, picked Mayo corner back Chris Barrett but also many of you also picked Dublin midfielder James McCarthy, who weighed in with a crucial 0-2 from play.

The morning after the night before, the 27 year old spoke to our own Oisin Langan about the experience of the heat of battle and how Dublin pulled through in an intense encounter.

"We didn’t play particularly well again in another All Ireland final but just our grit and determination got us through in the end," he said.

The physicality on show from both teams made for a tough encounter for both sides.

"Every time we play Mayo, it's a really physical game. It was just one of those games, it was end to end, it was hard-hitting, it was a tough, tough, tough game now," said McCarthy, before touching on how Dublin kept their composure in the heat of battle.

"There's no communication really, it's just communicating with your eyes and your body language and stuff like that.

"We're a really tight group, got together 6-7 years ago now at this stage, been through it all really, ups and downs, wins and losses. I think the view of our team is if some guy isn't playing well, another guy will step up to the plate. At different stages, different guys make plays that we need and I think that just got us over the line there yesterday."

On the three-in-a-row achievement, he said, "It's a unique thing to do in the GAA so it was a big motivating factor personally."
