How do the stats explain Jamie Vardy's rise to the top of the Premier League scorers list?

Fifteen years ago, ex-Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips was the top scorer in the Premier League and also the European Golden Boot winner.

And it seem the 42-year-old's magic has rubbed off on the current Premier League top scorer Jamie Vardy, who has been in sensational form for Leicester City this season.

As reported in The Guardian, Phillips - who has since gone on to a first team coaching role at Derby County - had an influence on Vardy while coaching at Leicester, emphasising the art of finishing over power behind shots.

That has resulted in nine goals in nine games in 2015-16 for a player, who famously took the non-league route to the top.

He was already a key player for the Foxes last season, but was not prolific in front of goal as he netted five times across 34 games, which a calculator does not have to explain is an inferior rate to this season.

Surprisingly, his shooting accuracy is actually down on last season according to statistics by Squawka.com. Last season saw him hit the target with 60 per cent of his attempts, with a marginal drop to 57 per cent in 2015-16.

However, there are other factors in play. He only attempted 48 shots in all 34 appearances in the last campaign, compared to 38 in nine games already currently.

In statistical terms that is a rise of 1.4 shots per game to 4.2 attempts per match, while the rate of shots from inside the penalty box is up from 79 per cent to 84 per cent to make him more of the proverbial Leicester fox in the box.

Positioning also helps as he played on the wings (particularly on the left) at times last season, whereas he has played as a striker more often in a 4-4-2 this season.

Either way, Leicester fans will be delighted with his goals streak as will Fantasy Football players.
