John Giles contrasts Manchester United and Liverpool's recent fortunes

John Giles feels Manchester United are on the right track heading into the closing stages of this season.

But by contrast, Liverpool are in an extremely poor run of form after a dire January followed by a loss to Leicester City on Monday.

United have won the EFL Cup, remain in the FA Cup and are in with a chance of winning the Europa League.

They are also likely to climb into the Top Four if they beat Bournemouth as expected on Saturday.

Liverpool meanwhile are in danger of slipping out of the Champions League places.

Speaking to Off The Ball about Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp's teams, John contrasted the two.

"They're going in the right direction which is the main thing at the moment," he said.

"I mean, Liverpool are going in the wrong direction. Manchester United are going in the right direction. They're much better on form in the last 10 matches than Liverpool have been. Liverpool have been having an absolute nightmare.

"But I don't think they've played as well as Mourinho thinks they've played or has said that they have played. Even in the League Cup final last week, I thought they were a bit lucky to win that match. Southampton were very good. But they have done it, they're up there and they're odds on to beat Bournemouth at the weekend so they are going in the right direction results-wise."

But John does feel that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is "carrying them a bit" this season and feels there is "room for a big improvement" in the team.

John also feels that Leicester City should stick with caretaker manager Craig Shakespeare until the end of the season after sacking their only Premier League winning manager Claudio Ranieri, and reiterated that the Foxes have made the "right move" by making last week's decision.
