"He's made it worse" - John Giles on Liverpool's defence and Alberto Moreno's return

Liverpool's weakest point in recent seasons has been defensively with an average set of centre backs and full backs currently on the club's books.

Jurgen Klopp did look to address those shortcomings this summer. At left back, Andrew Robertson was brought in from relegated Hull City in a role where James Milner had been fielded out of position.

The big purchase however was meant to be Southampton centre back Virgil van Dijk which has not occurred and has left Liverpool still weak defensively with the season already underway.

Frailties were already apparent in the opening weekend draw against Watford and the presence of the defensively vulnerable Alberto Moreno at left back having fallen out of favour last season has not impressed John Giles as he joined us as always on a Thursday night.

He told Off The Ball: "What [Klopp] has done with bringing Moreno back into the team having dropped him out, he's actually made the defence worse. Not better. He's made it worse. He hasn't bought anybody in, he's still got Moreno in the team going back two years when he was a disaster and he was a disaster again the other night [against Hoffenheim]."

The decision by Klopp to revert to Moreno has baffled John.

"You can't make any sense of it. Moreno has proven when he was in the team to be an absolute failure," he said, adding that the former Sevilla left back has not appeared to make an improvement as a player.

"He's as bad now, if not worse than he was two years ago. So where's the logic? There's no logic in that. You ask me why? I don't know."

John also shared his concerns about Klopp's ability to sort out a defence given the flaws that have been apparent in that department during the German's time in charge.

"So it's not good for the future of Liverpool," he added.
